Henry Mayo Newhall (1825-1882) was an American businessman known for his investments in rail companies, real estate and ranching. Arriving in San Francisco during the California Gold Rush, Newhall found success. With the help of partnerships, Newhall built one of the first two railroads in the state: the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad.

Edwin W. Newhall, son of Henry Newhall, learned the business and took a role in his father’s endeavors. After Henry passed away, Edwin and some of his brothers continued to manage their father’s business from their loft building on Sansome Street until it was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. As a replacement, The Newhall Building was built in 1908.

The building was designed by famed San Francisco architect, Lewis Parsons Hobart, who also designed the Grace Cathedral. Hobart was among the first to open an office and work on the reconstruction of the city after it was left in ruins from the 1906 earthquake. The Newhall Building was built at 260 California Street, where it still stands today.

Fast forward to today, The Newhall Building’s roof has been transformed into The Newhall Nest, a private event venue for any occasion in San Francisco, CA. The building is versatile due to the penthouse loft layout, making it favorable as a wedding venue, birthday celebration venue, and corporate meeting or event space. Commemorating special events in life means that someone is going to want everyone that has helped them along the way, including friends, family, and mentors, to attend their event. The Newhall Nest is the perfect space for your special event guests - it comfortably accommodates 80 people.
